Walk the last 100km of the Way of St. Olaf to the Trondheim Cathedral built over the tomb of St. Olaf, medieval king of Norway and martyr for the Catholic faith.  We will be walking on the Gudbrandsdalsleden which is the main route of several pilgrimage paths which have been walked for a thousand years to Trondheim.  Afterwards, there will be an unforgettable excursion to the western fjords- don’t miss this incredible opportunity!

ITINERARY

Way of St. Olaf

Days 1-7: Spend 6 days walking on the Way of St. Olaf along the Gudbrandsdalsleden which starts in Oslo and finishes in Trondheim  I Walking stages will be from Stamnan to Segard Hoel, to Løkken Verk, to Snøton, to Skaun/Konstadtunet, to Øysand, and, finally, to Trondheim I Enjoy the rolling hills of the countryside as you walk along country roads and trails from one small town to another

    Trondheim

    Days 7-8: Pray in the Nidaros (Trondheim) Cathedral, the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral built over the 11th century burial site of St. Olaf I Admire the ornate gothic details and visit the Archbishop’s Palace I Explore the city of Trondheim, the Viking capital of Norway, and enjoy some relaxation after your pilgrimage trek

    Bergen & Fjords

    Days 8-11: Hop on a short flight from Trondheim to Bergen, the capital of Fjord Norway I Pray at the relics of St. Sunniva I Enjoy a scenic train ride to Myrdal where you will have the option to go for a mostly downhill bike ride to Flam or take the historic train I Put out into a kayak in the Nærøyfjord around Gudvangen the next morning and explore the fjord I Transfer back to Bergen for our final dinner and departure the next morning

    LEVEL: There will be a mix of levels on this trip. There will be at least one night at the Premier level.  Most nights will be at the Superior or Standard level.  Due to limited accommodations along the Way of St. Olaf, there is the possibility of one or two nights at the Basic level.

    EATING

     We eat mainly at restaurants. Menus may be limited to fixed options or set menus. Some meals may be picnics.  Breakfasts provided are in the local style (typically not as hearty as American style). We can accommodate most food allergies.

    LUGGAGE

    You may bring any type of luggage with you on this trip.  This particular itinerary is not a backpack-only pilgrimage.  We will use luggage transfers during outdoor activities. We will provide a detailed packing list.

    PRAYING

    Prayer is at the heart of our pilgrimage.  Mass, the liturgy of the hours, the rosary, and other prayer opportunities are available throughout the pilgrimage for you to join as you like.  We hope to have a chaplain on this trip, but we cannot guarantee this.

    This ride is optional. It is one-way. There is a steep section on gravel with some tight turns that some people choose to walk. Other than that, it is mainly downhill on gravel and asphalt with time on a dedicated bike path and small country roads.

    “Optional” means it is easy for you to skip the activity.  Skipping or modifying other routes may be possible but not in as easy of a manner. Activities are weather-dependent. Distances and durations may vary from the information given above

    ARRIVAL

    Trondheim Airport (TRD) ALP staff will greet you at the Trondheim airport. The official pilgrimage start time is 2PM on arrival day (Day 1), but please arrive as early in the morning as you can.  Please wait for a trip confirmation to buy a plane ticket. Please note that if you are delayed past 2pm, you will need to meet us at the Berkak train station. ALP staff will give you instructions. 

    DEPARTURE

    Bergen Airport, Flesland (BGO)
    Departure will be in the morning on Day 11.  We will provide transport to the airport until noon that day.

    TRANSPORTATION

    We will be using a variety of transportation on this pilgrimage, both public and private. 

    INSURANCE

    Each pilgrim should have health insurance. We highly recommend purchasing traveler’s insurance as well.

    ELIGIBILITY

    Must be comfortable with the activities and activity levels listed and have a sense of adventure. Must be 18 or older.
